A reunion meal to remember…
Thirty years ago, our building in Leicester was a very different place.
It was the hub for Natwest bank in Leicestershire, the largest branch in the county, and its staff handled banking services for customers in the city and surrounding area.
And on Saturday night, some of those who used to work at the banking hall on St Martin’s returned to their old work place for a reunion meal.

Except, this time, the building has been restored and converted into a steakhouse after standing empty since the bank closed in 2000.
Altogether, 75 former members of staff returned to Leicester to catch up with old colleagues and friends to reminisce about their days working together.

Organiser Philip Reed, who still works for the bank in customer services, said: “It was brilliant to have so many former colleagues together again for the reunion. The fact so many people were interested in the event has been overwhelming – some had travelled from across the country to be there.
“We were all back inside the building where we first met. Thirty years ago, it was the largest Natwest bank branch in Leicestershire and now it’s a restaurant. The building’s use may be very different, but everyone’s pleased that it’s open to the public once again.”

Mr Reed and many others who attended the reunion worked at the bank during the 1980s, before internet banking existed and when all banking services were available within the branch. As a reminder of those days, the table place names were written on banking labels once used to tie change bags.
Mr Reed added: “Banking is very different now compared to how it was back then. At the time, we were a very sociable group of colleagues and we really enjoyed our time working together.”

Middletons Steakhouse and Grill is a 200-seat steakhouse restaurant which opened last month following a £1.5m restoration of one of Leicester’s architectural treasures.
Steve Hutton, managing director of Middletons, said: “We were delighted to welcome for staff back to their place of work. It has been a joy to bring this amazing building back to life for the local community in Leicester to enjoy once again.”
